This year ACM womENcourage 2023 hackathon theme is:

Social sustainability through integration and inclusion – addressing future challenges in CS

Following the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), this year’s hackathon wants to focus on societal problems and issues that are causes of inequality and discrepancies between different communities.

The United Nations defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

How We Can Make the World a Better Place by 2030 | Michael Green | TED Talks

Social sustainability is about identifying and managing business impacts, both positive and negative, on people. The first six of the UN Global Compact’s principles focus on this social dimension of corporate sustainability, of which human rights is the cornerstone. Social sustainability also covers the human rights of specific groups: labour, women’s empowerment and gender equality, children, indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, people-centered approaches to business impacts on poverty, education and health.

#1 Social sustainability entails inclusive societies in which citizens have a say and governments respond.

#2 Social inclusion entails providing opportunity for all people while also tackling deep-seated institutional imbalances.

#3 Empowerment is about assisting people in becoming the architects of their own solutions.

#4 Building resilient societies necessitates working in the most vulnerable and hardest circumstances.

Hackathon teams will choose one of the selected SDG and create new solutions or improve existing ones keeping in mind the importance of human value.
